Can PVC Dechlorination Bring Circularity Benefits? – An Analysis Using a Multi-Objective, Multi-Regional Technology Choice Model

The novel polyvinyl chloride (PVC) dechlorination technology addresses two challenges in the industrial metabolism of PVC: loss chlorine (Cl) into environment as calcium (CaCl2) or a component landfilled fly ash, and carbon (C). recovers Cl sodium (NaCl), conventional source Cl, also enables recovery carbon-containing chemicals that could potentially serve new C. reductions environmental impacts associated with supply chain will depend on deployment process handling PVC-containing products at end their life form composite resource. Using multi-objective multi-regional choice model developed this study applied to 8 regions including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, India, Australia, Mexico, China, Thailand, we found implementation reduce GHG emissions by up 3.73% area salt farming 44.9%, compared scenario no process. priority locations for are low emission intensity power generation proximity major PVC waste-generating regions.
